The Saunders Family Foundation handed over $6,000 worth of donations to sports groups and schools in the Cowichan Valley last Wednesday.
Seven different organizations were on the receiving end of the foundation’s generosity: the Cowichan Valley Minor Hockey Association, Cowichan Valley Lacrosse Association, South Cowichan Lawn Tennis Club, Duncan Christian School and Khowhemun Elementary School each received $1,000, while Cowichan Secondary Thunderbirds basketball and KidSport Cowichan each took home $500.
Bob Saunders started the foundation seven years ago to assist a variety of groups in Victoria, and it has since grown to help organizations across Vancouver Island, with thousands of dollars going to the Cowichan Valley each year. Saunders was born and raised in Duncan, and it remains a priority for him to help out his hometown.
Saunders recently sold Saunders Subaru to Jim Pattison, but that won’t mean the end of the foundation.
“The foundation will keep going forward,” Saunders said. “[Pattison] has said that if he can help the foundation, he will.”
In fact, Saunders expects to be busier than ever with the foundation. “If anything, I’ll be more involved,” he said. “The foundation is growing in leaps and bounds.”
