Scenic Peak to Beak Run goes Sept. 22

18 km run from Knox Mountain to Quail's Gate features fee bottle of wine for first 100 registrants

Trevor Haaheim’s successes at past Peak to Beak Runs isn’t the only reason the Kelowna runner thoroughly enjoys taking part in the annual road race.

Win or lose, the five-time champ rates the 18 km journey from Knox Mountain to Quail’s Gate Estate Winery as his favourite race of the year.

The 31st running of the Peak to Beak is set for Sunday, Sept. 22.

“I love the route, the scenery and just the point-to-point challenge of the race,” said Haaheim, who is serving this year as the race co-director. “Regardless of the length, I like the simplicity of the race, the downhill at the start, crossing the bridge, along Campbell Road and Kalamoir Park on the Westside…it’s just a great run from beginning to end.”

Because of the 18 km distance and considerable downhill trek at the beginning of the race, Haaheim said many casual, less-competitive runners tend to shy away from the event.

But Haaheim says the race isn’t designed only for the ultra-competitive athlete.

“Even the fastest guys aren’t going flat out on the downhill to start, so that’s a good part of the race for anyone to use as a warm-up,” Haahiem said. “Once you get to the bottom of the hill, you can really enjoy the scenery from there. It’s pretty pristine along the water, just a nice way to spend your morning.”

As of midweek, about 65 people had signed up for the race. As a special promotion this year, the first 100 registrants will receive a full-sized bottle of Quail’s Gate wine.

While 80 to 100 entries has been typical of past races, Haaheim would like to see 125 sign up for this year’s event.

Lunch at Quail’s Gate will be available for all runners following the race, while volunteers will each receive a T-shirt.

The cost for the run is $30 per person. To register, visit www.interiorunningassociation.com

In addition, Trevor Haaheim is offering a pre-race training session on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 6:30 a.m.
