Spencer Schmidt of Abbotsford has signed on with the Trinity Western University men’s soccer team for the 2011-12 season.
The W.J. Mouat Secondary grad is entering his fourth season of eligibility following two years at the University of Washington (2004-2005) and a year at the University of the Fraser Valley (2007).
Schmidt was a standout striker at UFV, tying for second in the Canada West goal-scoring race with eight, while leading the conference in shots per game (4.14). He was named a CIS all-Canadian following the 2007 campaign, becoming the first UFV player to earn that honour.
Schmidt’s younger sister Sophie is a regular with Canada’s senior women’s national team, and Spencer has represented Canada at the U17 level.
