Abbotsford’s Sophie Schmidt has been named to the Canadian women’s soccer team roster for an international friendly vs. the United States.
The game runs June 2 at a sold-out BMO Field in Toronto, and pits two rivals who combined to author a memorable Olympic semifinal last summer in London. The Americans won that game 4-3 on Alex Morgan’s extra-time goal, after tying the game late on a controversial penalty kick. The U.S. went on to win gold, while Canada beat France in a 1-0 thriller to earn bronze.
Schmidt, a 24-year-old midfielder, has made 105 appearances for Canada in her career.
