Time to serve up some volleyball this week, as we catch up on recognizing some of the top girls’ teams from local elementary and secondary schools from the past season…
First to elementary, where there were separate leagues and playoffs for large and small schools. For the larger schools with a population of 250 or more, playoffs resulted in a district championship for Randerson Ridge. On the top team were players Claire Krynowsky, Ireland Shepherd, Maddy Rutledge, Dani Svenson, Mackenzie Khakh, Zoe Skocic, Tabatha Younger, Emma Hildebrandt, Trinity LaRose, Sarah Norman, Aurin Das, Courtney Ingram, Annika Puls, Sarah Carey and Katie Fortier. Coaches were Jolaine Derby and Sarah Frostad.
Runners-up were the girls from Forest Park, coached by Meghan Carver and Kameron Smith. On the team were Yebin Yun, Jayda Batta, Makayla Flowerdew, Samantha Dougan, Acacia Christensen, Hailee Bartleman, Caity Sayers, Jordyn Wells and Georgia Smith.
Quarterway took third place, as Mike Lundine provided the coaching for players Annelise Jensen, Aylah Mrus, Kate Cameron, Malaika Abay, Nakapat Pomsinsub, Robyn Boar and Sam Caron.
For smaller schools, the district championship went to Rutherford Elementary. Angela Losch provided the coaching for players Nicole Kearey, Brynn Nikirk, Stella Parr, Holly Proctor, Ishita Sharma, Martha Boon, Olivia Carter, Emily Heese, Marie Johnson, Paige Kaps, Cayley McPhillips, Maria Patenaude and Haliyah Peck.
Claiming second place in the district was the team from Frank J. Ney, coached by Lorne Ratzlaff. On the squad were players Kenzie Owen, Kaleigh Quinn, Leah Sanderson, Sarah Hoppe, Ailsa Wilson, Malila Doolan, Paige Higgins, Erin Clouthier, Brianna Toop, Gillian Holmes and Haileigh Dawson.
In third place came Chase River, where Russell Greenway coached players Selina Britt, Zoe Butler, Mikayla Carson, Olivia Isaac, Chelsea LeGood, Kylie Lesperance, Esme Lillyman, Grei Orser, Rosalie Seggie, Miranda Smidts, Vada Tropea and Kira Trudeau.
At the secondary level, the Dover Bay AAAA senior girls’ volleyball team won the North Island championship, were second at the Islands and finished sixth at provincials. Dave Nelson coached the team.
Congratulations also to the senior girls’ AA team from Woodlands, who hosted the Islands this year and went on to place 10th at provincials. Ryan Orton and Ryne Barton were the coaches.

Volleyball teams bring full effort onto the court
Last week we acknowledged young athletes who played on top girls’ volleyball teams last season at the elementary and secondary levels. So we’ll give equal space to boys’ teams this week…
In elementary schools, competition for bantam (born 2002-03) teams was split into small and large school divisions. Each division held its own league matches and post-season playoffs.
Angela Losch was the coordinator for the small school division for schools with a population of less than 250 students. She sends word that the Rutherford Elementary bantam boys won the district championship. Losch was the coach for the winning team and the player roster consisted of Dexter Berry, Marcus Bowman, Liam Dunn, Liam Gregory, Josh Kahlon, Dawson Labbe, Nolan Pritchard, Stewart Stephen, Jayden Wahlla, Lynden Wellwood, Justin Harris, Aidan Collery and Cooper Weeks.
Second place went to the Frank J. Ney team coached by Wayne Clouthier. Team members included Minghao Chen, Rece Burgos, Login Beemer, Mason Nordli, Gibeom Bae, Dexter Heys and Rob Chadwick.
Cilaire finished third in the bantam boys’ playoffs. Representing their school were players Ben Villares, Adam King, Landon Brooks, Jacob Potts, Justin Kantor, Sam Laidlaw, Brennan Moody, Luke Lavery and Riley Clay. Ken Hird was team coach and Alana Lavery was the staff sponsor.
For the large school division, Meghan Carver was the coordinator. The district playoff championship was won by Mountain View, where Linda French and Chris Depka sharing coaching duties. On the winning team were players Colton Campbell, Tristan Dorman, Brandon Burrows, Sean Clark, Jason Depka, Tyson Doumont, Lochlan Guild, Mitchell Finner, Logann Lowrence, Haresh Mehta, Bennett Murphy and Luke Shorting.
Runners-up were the boys from Rock City, coached by Jane Hepples. Team members were Alex Coates, Lucas Johnstone, Rok Kang, Jayden Mah, Lucas Matues, Jack Squire, Jake Seaman, Ryan Seaman and Lucas Tutton.
The Forest Park entry took third place. Players were Ben Coghlan, Jack Miller, Connor Stone, Sean Duquette, Damond Arial, Connor Dewitt, Evan Somers and Taran Gill. Coach for the boys was Dave Kotai.
Turning to high school boys’ volleyball, congratulations to the Dover Bay AAA squad coached by Josie Webb. The Dolphins won the North Island and Island Championships and went on to a third-place finish at provincials.
At the AA level, the Woodlands Secondary team placed third at Islands and then 14th at provincials. Hung Tang was the coach.
Now, having acknowledged the above teams, the Thorpe Report is going to take a break during August to enjoy the sunshine.
