CALGARY – For the first time in their history, the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women’s basketball team has had a player named to the CIS all-star team.
Post Diane Schuetze (4th year, Vernon) was named to the CIS second all-star team for 2011-12. Schuetze, a VSS Panther grad, was fourth in the nation in points scored (averaging 18.6 per game), she was third in Canada in free throws (111-142), eighth in points scored per 40 minutes (23.9) and ninth in total points scored (334).
Schuetze was honored Friday night at a banquet at the Sheraton Suites Eau Claire in conjunction with the CIS women’s basketball championships here.
Said TRU head coach Scott Reeves: “We are very proud of Diane and the whole team this year. Diane had a great off season of training and it showed during this past year. She came into camp in great shape and continued to improve each week out. “
Hannah Sunley-Paisley, a fifth-year post from the University of Ottawa, was named the CIS player of the year.
The native of Toronto received the Nan Copp Award, making her the first player in Gee-Gees history to claim a CIS major award in women’s hoops.
Windsor point guard Miah-Marie Langlois was named the defensive player of the year; St. Francis Xavier point guard Vanessa Pickard captured the Kathy Shields Award as the nation’s top freshman; Regina head coach Dave Taylor, received the Peter Ennis Award and Lakehead forward Lindsay Druery took the Sylvia Sweeney Award for excellence in hoops and academics.
