The Vernon Scotiabank Scorpions went 3-1 to place third in the 12-team Salmon Arm Bantam Rec Hockey Tournament last weekend.
The Scorpions iced the Kamloops Saints 5-2 in their opener with MVP Rowyn Lewis-Hatherley pulling the hat trick and singles coming from Ben Aspenlieder and Aaron Keryluke. Captain Brock Wagner set up all of Lewis-Hatherley’s goals.
The Scorpions then doubled the Kamloops Flames 6-3 with Aspenlieder earning two goals, going top shelf, from his knees, for one.
Cole Adams started the scoring on a beautiful pass from Landon Munk, who finished with two helpers. Wagner added 1+3, while Lewis-Hatherley and Solomon Ivanoff also scored. Nik Negraiff enjoyed a strong two-way showing.
Munk and Wagner both used coast to coast rushes for hat tricks as the Scorpions stuffed the Surrey Sharks 7-4 in Game 3. Jeremy Pogue added a single and Keryluke delivered two assists.
Game MVP went to persistent Solomon Ivanoff for his never-give-up attitude. Trey Spanier was stellar in making 22 saves.
The Scorpions then bowed 6-3 to the Kelowna Stars in semifinal action with Lewis-Hatherley, Aspenlieder and Munk scoring. Assists came from Thomas Wolgram and Wagner (MVP).
“The kids played an excellent season and worked very hard,” said coaches Matt Kolb and Theo Wagner. “Even with the shortcomings of tournaments and playoffs, we felt they all improved in the sense of the game, and as individuals. We had a fantastic time coaching them.”
The Butcher Boys Red Wings lost 4-2 to Abbotsford in the A final of the Merritt Pee Wee Rec Tournament Sunday.
Goals from Brooke Berube and Colton Greeno with assists from Cole Benjaminsen, Keefer Kaempf and Colton Greeno led the Wings.
“Although dampened with injuries late in the season, broken arms and legs, and the flu, the team ended up having a great end to the season,” said Wings’ coach Frank Kaempt.
Butcher Boys opened with a 4-2 win over Salmon Arm with Benjaminsen scored twice and singles going to Brendan Horsfield and Jake Pelletier. Kaempf and Greeno each had two helpers.
The Wings then shut down Kamloops 2-0 on two goals by Pelletier, with assists from Berube and Kaempf.
Pelletier scored four times and Greeno added three as the Wings mauled Merritt 11-3 in their last preliminary game. Kaempf earned 2+3, while Horsfield and Berube added singles.
