Sooke Atom Seahawk safety/running back Jacob Laliberty picks off a Gordon Head pass, helping his team to a victory Sunday at EMCS field.

Seahawks one for three in home openers

Sunday’s game was a hard fought battle for the Village Foods Sooke Pre-Atom Seahawks against a hardworking Gordon Head Raiders team.

Although Sooke lost 22-0, the score did not reflect team effort. Sooke’s MVP Spencer Logan ran the ball with bull-like strength and blocked and tackled the same way.

First year player Manny Ratcliffe, offensive player of the game, stood his ground consistently. Defensive player of the game Caleb Carrier substituted for centre and lineman and was a force to be reckoned with.

First year players Beau Hicks, Adam Hughes, Austin Cavan and Ian Macdonald put in fine performances for their first game ever.

Quarterback Tyler Umbach played both ways and made numerous tackles. Louis Philipe Gagnon, Josh Danielson, Ben Powers, SimonHerold and  the rest of the team pulled together, however, they couldn’t get a touchdown. Team captain Jacob Lamontagne was very proud of the effort his teammates put in – never giving up and playing through the whole game. Defensive coach Kent Cross said his defensive corps just had a few unlucky breaks.

The Handcraft Woodworks Sooke Seahawk Atom team played their first game of the season on Sunday at home at Edward Milne Field against the Gordon Head Raiders.

The first half of the game the Seahawks looked rusty with many fumbles on the offensive side of the ball, however, the mighty Seahawk defence played strong – only allowing the Raiders one touchdown and not much else.

With the Seahawks trailing 6-0 the Hawks took the opening second half kickoff and, with strong runs by  quarterback Nick Pollock and running backs Jacob Laliberty and Cole Johns, marched the ball downfield. First year running back Richard Innes then turned on his fast wheels and ran in a touchdown to tie the game.

The Sooke defence continually shut down the Gordon Head offence with strong plays by linebackers Zac Bedford, Andrew Abell and sacks by Elijah Leversedge, Bailey Mcmillan and Tyson Bastone. Late in the fourth quarter with the Raiders pinned deep in their end, Bedford came up with a huge fumble recovery and gave Sooke a chance. With starting quarterback Pollock on the sidelines nursing an ankle injury, up stepped backup quarterback Jacob Laliberty to take charge of the offence. Laliberty executed like a veteran with great pitches and nifty runs of his own. With 42 seconds left in the game fullback Cole Johns powered his way into the end zone to give the Seahawks a 12-6 lead. The Sooke defence came back onto the field and shut down Gordon Head giving the Seahawks a thrilling come from behind victory.

Players of the game for Sooke were Jacob Laliberty on offence,  Zac Bedford on defence. The Atom Seahawks have a bye next weekend and then will play Westshore in their next game.
