Playing against Senior AAA high school football competition for the second consecutive week, the Seaquam Seahawks staged a second half rally but came up just short in a 21-16 loss to the West Vancouver Highlanders Saturday afternoon.
Playing at Seaquam Secondary, the Senior AA Seahawks trailed 21-7 at half time, but some defensive adjustments shut down the West Vancouver offence after the break. But Seaquam couldn’t add to their point total until the fourth period. Keegan Lensink with a 27-yard field goal and Mark Lego with a touchdown pulled the ‘Hawks to within a score, but their last offensive possession ended at midfield with less than a minute to play.
Quarterback Mark Green scored the other Seaquam touchdown in the first half.
The Seahawks are 1-2 (won-lost) in preseason play. They host the Rick Hansen Hurricanes in another exhibition contest Saturday at Seaquam. Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m.
The Holy Cross Crusaders fell to 0-3 in preseason play after a 55-28 loss to the Senior AAA St. Thomas More Knights. Playing in the Senior AA division, the Crusaders host the Abbotsford Christian Knights at 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.
The Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers are 3-0 after a 23-20 win on the road over Cascades, Washington. They are away from home again Friday, kicking off at 3:30 p.m. against the New Westminster Hyacks.
In Junior Varsity play, the Seaquam Seahawks fell 43-0 to the Carson Graham Eagles. Highlights for Seaquam included a successful onside kick by Mark Szakun, the punting of Josh Hudniak, Nolan Spalek shutting down the Eagles running game, and Kyle Gervin’s touchdown-saving tackle.
The Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers remain unbeaten in exhibition play after a 23-14 win over the Vancouver College Fighting Irish. Joseph Carter led the Panthers offence with 26 carries for 278 yards, scoring on touchdown runs of eight, 60 and 92 yards.
Quarterback Connor McKay completed four of eight passes for 62 yards, as well as rus hing for 22 yards on six carries.
Dylan Battye stood out on both sides of the ball with 32 rushing yards and 29 yards receiving, while making four tackles on defence.
