There’s a new vibe around Seaton  Secondary School’s sports programs.

Two years ago, the Seaton Athletics Booster Club was formed to increase the profile of sports at the school. Today, 20 teams representing 30 per cent of the school population are involved in athletics.

The Sonics honoured their finest at a gala Wednesday night in their gym.

“We put this evening together to celebrate the accomplishments of our teams this year, and the efforts of the students in school sports,” said athletic director Nathan Lee.

“Sports for students helps teach them many life lessons, and their achievements are certainly worth celebrating.”

The fun-filled night featured ‘minute to win it’ games, some 68 awesome door prizes and more than 25 raffle draws from donations of local businesses and sports organizations, plus lots of candy for the students and parents to snack on, along with a bottle drive to aide the fundraising for next year.

Athletics awards were handed out with  numerous nominations of very worthy candidates making selections difficult.

The winners were:

Grade 8 Girls Coaches’ Award – Jaden Scott and Kaia Barker.

Grade 8 Boys Coaches’ Award – Jack Cotter.

Grade 8 Girls Athlete of the Year – Lanaya Bandy and Marika Ternan.

Grade 8 Boys Athlete of the Year – Liam Glennon.

The senior boys volleyball Sonics were chosen Team of the Year.

All Grade 12 students who played sports in all of their five Seaton years were recognized by receiving a personalized pendant.

“Great people make great things happen,” said Lee. “ I am a very blessed athletics director to have stepped into such a dynamo. What is happening for kids at Seaton is great.  It was very cool to see so many kids fired up about being Sonics tonight.”
