The Cowichan Rugby Football Club’s senior women’s team defied the elements and charged to a 35-5 win over Brit Lions on a snow-covered Piggy Park pitch last Saturday.
The weather wasn’t actually much of a factor, according to Cowichan captain Sherry Spence.
“It was a snowy day,” she acknowledged. “But once we started playing, it wasn’t the worst weather conditions we had ever played in.”
Tyson Beukeboom led the way with two tries, while Madison Pirie, Rebecca Saari, Jamie Russell and Avi Sharabi had one each. Sharabi also slotted a convert and shared Player of the Game honours with Nenagh McCulloch.
“It’s nice to have Avi back now that her UVic season has come to an end,” Spence said. “She jumped in at fullback — she had big shoes to fill stepping in for Carolyn Gudmundseth who is starting to step away from playing.”
The Cowichan senior men were scheduled to play a Third Division match at Westshore on Saturday, but the weather forced the cancellation of that one.
Both Cowichan senior teams will be in action again on Nov. 18 as the women play host to Abbotsford and the men play a Times Cup match against Port Alberni.
