A new soccer league in town wants to give 1-0 games the boot. Nanaimo Seven a Side soccer took to the pitch Thursday at Harewood Centennial Park with 110 players on 11 teams.
“There’s a lot of players that all played soccer growing up and they’re looking for a place to play with less commitment,” said Jordan Reems, one of the organizers.
There are no road trips to Victoria – instead, the teams gather at the field next to John Barsby Community Secondary School every Thursday night for eight weeks.
The games are co-ed, but there are no specific rules to that effect – organizers will just try to match teams against opponents of the same skill level.
Games are played on a half-sized soccer pitch, but with full-sized nets.
“Hopefully there’s high-scoring games and not as much running as a full field,” Reems said.
Organizers are hoping to hear from enough players to put together a 12th team. For more information, visit www.nanaimo7aside.com.
