Several teams taking on Elevator Race

Over 20 teams are expected to take part in inaugural Elevator Race

Organizers of the Elevator Race would have been delighted if 10 teams took part in this Saturday’s race.

Mike Hill, of Hoodoo Adventures, which is putting on the event with support from the Ramada Inn, said they are ecstatic there will be 22 teams.

Starting at the S.S. Sicamous at 8 a.m., athletes will begin with an eight-kilometre paddle, then take on a 20-km bike ride, a seven-km run/snowshoe, eight-km mountain bike, eight-km cross-country ski and finish up with a two-km run/downhill ski.

Helping set up the event for success are people from Peach City Runners and Kevin Cutjar of Impact Multisport Coaching. Hill said that has given the event immediate credibility. Another aspect Hill wants to see are spectators.

“We are actively encouraging people to come check out the event,” said Hill.

Based on feedback provided by some of the athletes who have trained on the course, Hill said the lead teams are expected into the Gun Barrel Saloon at Apex Mountain between noon and 1 p.m.

“If they go as fast as they are capable, we have underestimated how in shape they are after a winter,” said Hill. “We’re excited. Praying for good weather, that is a concern. Weather is looking dodgy.”

The race will continue regardless, but Hill said if there is snow on the road, they will stop the cyclists where the snow lines become dangerous. They want to assure safety. They will have the athletes continue at the next point.

One thing Hill stressed is that the race isn’t just for elite athletes.

“It is achievable by anyone with a moderate level of fitness,” he said. “You can do it with friends for fun.”

There is still time for people to register, as organizers will take registration until before the race starts. There is a pre-race participants meeting on March 30 at 7 p.m. at the Ramada Inn. To register, check www.theelevatorrace.ca or call 250-490-6084. People can also get forms from Peach City Runners and Freedom the Bike Shop.

The event will raise money for outdoor education programs benefitting the Penticton Indian Band Youth Group, who will get an opportunity to participate in an intro to adventure guide programs led by Hoodoo Adventure Company. Lyndie Hill of Hoodoo Adventures said it’s the perfect fit as they have activities in place with its youth program. Money will be raised from participating teams giving donations.
