Maple Ridge’s Connor Sanvido has transferred from St. Thomas University to the University of Lethbridge and will play hockey for the Pronghorns next season
After overhauling the roster prior to last season, the Pronghorn men’s hockey team announced its 2016-17 recruiting class with the addition of nine players: five forwards, three defencemen, and one goaltender.
After St. Thomas University decided to cut their men’s hockey program, Sanvido, a right winger, chose to transfer to the Pronghorn program and will be eligible to compete immediately. In two seasons with the Tommies, Sanvido recorded 10 goals and 10 assists in 51 games.
Prior to joining the Tommies, Sanvido played four seasons in the WHL with the Seattle Thunderbirds, Swift Current Broncos and the Saskatoon Blades. In 252 career games, he scored 42 goals and added 51 assists.
The ‘Horns open the regular season at home Oct. 14, when they host the Regina Cougars.
B.C. bronze
West Coast Auto Group Football Club Metro Select earned bronze at the provincial under-14 A cup soccer championships last weekend at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex.
The Selects defeated the Kamloops Blaze 3-1 to finish third.
After falling 3-0 to North Shore, the Selects tied the Upper Island Storm 1-1, then downed Kamloops 3-1. Tied for second with the Storm after round-robin play, the Selects played for bronze based on goal-differential.
The Selects were coached by Graham Thompson and Jason Boldt.
Gold in Sheffield
A contingent of Maple Ridge players won gold and silver at the World ball Hockey Championships in Sheffield, England on Tuesday.
Canada won the under-16 and u-18 divisions, and came second pin u-20.
Marco Petrelli, of the Ridge Meadows Minor Ball Hockey Association, played goal for the gold-medal winning u-16 team and was named tournament MVP.
The u-18 team was coached by, Dave Weloy, who also coaches with the local association. The team featured Ridge players Chase Pederson (defense), Dylan Grier (forward) and Marc Gautreau (forward).
B.C. hosts
The Ridge Meadows Minor Softball Association will host the B.C. under-12A championships this weekend at Albion Sports Complex.
The event will feature 14 teams, including two from the host association – the ‘04 and ‘05 Pride. The ‘04 team went 12-0-3 this season, while the ‘05 group was 5-13 in the same A division.
Other teams will come from Victoria, Tri-City, White Rock, Cloverdale, Langley and Delta associations.
Opening ceremonies are 5 p.m. Friday.
