They’re not a slick team from the city, but they earned their way to nationals just the same.
Shuswap Mariners Men’s competitive slo-pitch team finished third in Provincials at Softball City in White Rock over the September long weekend, which qualified them for Nationals in 2012 in New Brunswick.
Their placing included a 14-15 extra inning loss to the eventual champions from Langley.
“We’re farmers, bakers, website designers…, says an enthusiastic Mariner Al Boucher. “It’s one of those things where there’s so much depth in the Lower Mainland for players. For us to be able to play against them in the Lower Mainland, that really says something.”
Not to mention the Mariners don’t have a league at home to play in. They just practice, practice, and play tournaments when they can.
The team, which is hoping for a sponsor to help send them to nationals, is made up of Kevin Jonker, Brian Sheehan, Al Boucher, Brad Romyn, Richard Delange, Glenn Shane, Josh Gordon, Justin Syme, Ryan Anderson, Daryn Stewart and Jim Davis.
