It’s time to tee up for the 100 Mile House Legion’s annual Golf Tournament and Steak Barbecue on Sept. 10.
Legion #160 secretary Rick Smale says registration closes Sept. 7 (not as advertised on Aug. 18, page A24) for this year’s tourney at the Marmot Ridge Golf Course.
The tournament’s $35 registration fee includes the steak dinner, green fees and a putting contest (but book your own carts at the Marmot Ridge), he explains.
Smale notes tee off will be a shotgun start at 1 p.m. on Sept. 10, and each team of four players must include one Legion member golfing – but if you don’t already have one, they’ll find one for you.
Any adults (age 19 or older) who aren’t golfing can enjoy the steak barbecue for $15, as long as they register by Sep. 7 for the meal, Smale says, adding there will be plenty of Legion members available to sign in guests.
He notes the Legion’s famous steak barbecues featuring Frank’s Custom Meat’s beef New York cuts are always very popular, and the dinner will include baked potatoes, salads and dessert.
This annual event is an important fundraiser for the Legion #260, to keep its doors open for the veterans who served to defend our country and protect its citizens, and the dependents they leave behind, Smale explains.
“The main focus of the Legion is remembrance – to keep it in the front of people’s memories that we’re not just sitting here for [laughs] – some people died to let us do this, and have continued to do so today.”
Smale adds repairs to the older Legion building are needed, but it just doesn’t have the money to cover.
“Our roof needs a good going over, and our back stairs and deck all need to be replaced.”
While former roof repairs stemmed some major leaks, it also needs to be “stripped right down to the joists” and replaced, he explains.
The Legion’s golf and barbecue event has been held for at least 20 years, he notes.
Smale says the 2015 tourney had about 40 participants on 10 teams, with 20 more attending the dinner only, so about 60 people enjoyed the steak barbecue.
Register for the tourney, or the steak dinner only, at the Legion at 933 Alder Ave.
Smale notes the Legion is usually open Wednesday-Saturdays from 1 p.m. to closing (5 p.m. or later), but call ahead at 250-395-2511 first as its volunteers can be called away, or he may be there on other days to sign people up.
