Four Sooke figure skaters carved out impressive results at the Vancouver Island regional championship in Esquimalt recently.
Madison Riddell and Emma Duffield each skated away with Silver Star 2 rankings, while Nadia Scott and Sophie Roe earned Silver Star 3.
Riddell and Scott also won Bronze Star 3 team elements event.
The four Sooke skaters range in age from 12 to 15.
Figure skaters at this level aren’t ranked but are evaluated and given a standard of merit, gold, silver or bronze. Once they get to a higher level of competition, the program switches over to where they are ranked.
“I am very pleased with the skaters’ work ethic and commitment to their skating,” said coach Garry Knox of the Sooke Skating Club.
“We train about three hours a week on ice and 30 minutes off ice working on strength and flexibility specific to figure skating. These skaters also volunteer their time to help coach and mentor the younger skaters in our Canskate program.”
Members of the Sooke Skating Club are now preparing for their year-end show, which takes place at SEAPARC arena on March 7 at 5:45 p.m.
The show will highlight skaters in Canskate, junior prep, junior, and intermediate programs.
