Younger than their opponents and short of players,  the T2 Crew exceeded all expectations with a silver medal effort at the U16 Canadian club volleyball national championships in Calgary.

The U15 Crew, coached by Tammy Thomas, played up an age group and finished second in Tier 1, Div. 3 at the nationals May 21 to 24.

The Crew was the surprise of the tournament, finishing second in the preliminary pool on the first day, then winning their power pool on Day 2.

In the semifinals, the Crew trailed 9-1 in the third set before digging deep to come back for the win and a spot in the final.

In the close and exciting final match, the Crew fell to KVA to take the silver medal.

Setter Sarah Hall was the glue for the T2 U15 Crew while middles Rachel Schueler and Brooke Tremblay were almost unstoppable at the net and did an impressive job of blocking the opponent’s attack.

Power hitters Mikayla McLeod and Sydney Hope were strong on offense at the net.  Lauren Jonker was serving aces when it was needed most during the tournament. Emily Barry was courageous on defence as the Libero.

Sydney Berisoff, who joined the team last minute, was fearless on the court and consistent in her offensive hitting and passing.

With half their roster missing and up against the best teams in Western Canada, the Crew defied the odds by winning silver at U16 nationals.

Coach Tammy Thomas said of the Crew “…the future looks bright for this group of fierce and talented players.”
