Maple Ridge’s Cody Osborn and Cameron Hicks help lead the Team B.C. men’s wrestling team to a silver medal at the Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Que. on Wednesday.
The team went undefeated in the preliminary round to earn a berth in the final against Ontario. However, it couldn’t overcome the strong eastern squad and fell 31-17 in the final.
Osborn, fighting in the 63-kilogram class, went 3-1 in his preliminary round fights. He topped Manitoba’s Briton Lewis on points in the team’s opening win. He followed that up with a win over Ryan McGregor of Nova Scotia. Osborn also toppled Quebec’s Benjamin Bédard.
His only loss in preliminary matches came at the hands of Vincent Kuilboer of Alberta.
Hicks, fighting in the 42kg class, won his debut match 5-1 against Dylan Mclean of Quebec. Hicks pinned Joshua Skory of Alberta. in the second round of the team’s 40-13 overall win.
In the finals, Hicks dropped a 3-1 decision to Ontario’s Marco Palermo while Alec McNeil bested Osborn 4-0.
Wrestling
On the women’s side, Payten Smith is set to keep her three-year undefeated streak alive as she is headed to the gold medal match in the women’s individual category.
Smith pinned Rebecca Sparrow of Newfoundland in the semi-final to advance to Thursday night’s final against Ontario’s Laura Barr.
Smith pinned Barr during the B.C. women’s team preliminary round match.
Despite Smith’s perfect record during team matches, Team B.C. lost the bronze-medal match in a closely contested battle, losing 28-23 to Saskatchewan. Smith pinned Brittany Delahey to earn five points, but it wasn’t enough to propel the squad to the podium.
Baseball
Maple Ridge products Kyle Ross and Andre Pelletier have lead Team B.C. to a 5-1 record and first place in round-robin play of group A men’s baseball.
The team was to face the undefeated New Brunswick squad in Thursday night’s semi-final for an automatic berth in the gold medal game Friday at 3 p.m.
The loser of the semis will play Ontario for the chance to claim the other spot in the final.
Ross, a left-handed pitcher with the Langley Blaze, lead team B.C. to a 10-0 win over Ontario in his first start. He pitched five innings of three-hit baseball.
Pelletier went 6-15 for a .400 avg. over the course of round robin play. He chipped in with seven runs scored, three walks, and four RBI. Team B.C.’s only loss came at the hands of Quebec, dropping an 11-9 decision.
Softball
Jaycee Affeldt and Iris Chow of Maple Ridge have Team B.C. in the medal round of women’s softball after finishing forth in the round robin play with a 6-3 record. B.C. was to play third-place Ontario Thursday evening for a chance to move on.
Chow, who plays at Douglas College, went 6-24 for a .250 avg. She scored nine runs with three walks. Affeldt finished with a 2.02 ERA, striking out 28 batters in 24.1 innings.
