The popular Six-A-Side Co-ed Soccer League will be celebrating its 20th season.
The Regional District of Nanaimo recreation department’s summer league event will kick off on July 5 at Kwalikum Secondary School soccer field.
It’s a popular activity that is the brainchild of Rob Morrison, who has facilitated the soccer program since he started it 20 years ago.
“Rod is a very dedicated volunteer and has ran this event every year,” said RDN recreation programmer Jennifer Hopewell. “It has become a popular event over the years as it averages around 100 players or more each year.”
The fun program, which can also be competitive, is open to players 16 years old and up with some soccer experience required.
Registration is now open until June 27. You can do it by heading to Oceanside Place in Parksville or reginster online at https://ca.apm.activecommunities.com/rdnrecreation/#
Hopewell advises those who want to play to register early to ensure placement on a team. The season will last until Aug. 23.
“It’s a family-oriented event,” said Hopewell.
“Families can come out to watch. There are instances were the father watches the kids while the mom plays. Or they can have a picnic during the games.”
Among those looking forward to the season is Erica Dragani, who haven’t played for a couple of years and is making a comeback this year.
“It’s super fun and it helps you get in shape,” said Dragani. “I am trying to get more of my friends to come out.”
So if you love soccer and want to have fun with your family, the cost to join per person is $28. The games are played from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. every Thursday. Players are required to wear cleats and shin pads for safety.
The teams are organized by Morrison, said Howell, and he tries his best to make it balance and fair. But requests for family members and close friends to play together may be accommodated to encourage the recreational atmosphere the league supports.
If you want to join but are unable to play every week, you can be placed in the sub-list and will be placed by the organizer.
