Skaters bring talent, energy to camp

The figure skaters from Fuller Lake Skating Club are bringing their skill and energy to the Vancouver Island Regional Development Program.

“There’s a high level of coaching and they get tons of experience on ice,” Alice Barlow-Kedves, spokesperson and parent of a club member, said.

She said the skaters really enjoy the trip.

“It’s fun, too.”

Usually an Olympian skater attends the camp to help coach the kids.

Amber Ree, 11, of Ladysmith said she thought it was really cool to meet Olympian pair skater, Craig Buntin.

She said the program is really fun.

“I learn new things and I’m with all my friends,” she said.

The program is designed to identify talent at an early age, develop skaters and promote team spirit.

It’s also a stepping stone to the B.C. provincial development team.

Barlow-Kedves said the skaters are moving the whole time they’re there.

“They’re skating for three hours a day and then they do yoga and dance classes,” she said.

She said local businesses have been really supportive in helping the team participate in the event this year.

The skaters participating are Taylor Trudgeon of Chemainus, Riley Buckner of Chemainus, Brianna Neva-Leonard of Duncan, Amber Ree of Ladysmith, Sarah Kedves of Ladysmith, Paris Hanke of Chemainus, Lauren Kendall of Chemainus, Naomi Eastman of Crofton and Heather Robertson of Chemainus.

The program is April 22 to 24 in Kelowna. Fuller Lake Skating Club is skating in Duncan for the rest of the season.

The last competition of the year is April 16 to 18 in Parksville.
