The Terrace Skating Club leapt into first place at regionals last weekend, with one skater earning an impressive six medals.
Skating against clubs from as far as Fort Nelson, Dawson Creek, and Williams Lake, the small, 10-skater team from Terrace earned a total of 29 medals, more than any other club.
That earned the club the team trophy at the Cariboo North Central Regional Championship in Williams Lake Jan. 21-22.
Brianne Monsen stood out among the dozens of northern skaters, being awarded a stunning two gold, three silver and one bronze medal in her skating categories.
Gliding through an elegant ballroom-style solo dance, Monsen won first in the Star 8/9 solos, topping that off with winning jumps and spins in the Star 7/8 team elements category.
Other skaters who performed as part of the winning team were Maya Lecuyer, Camryn Monsen, Halle Classen, Makayla Forrest, Teysean Henry, Kaytlin Gingles, Emma DeCario, Hanah Lee and coach Heather Hanna.
Winning the trophy, which honours the team with the most medals, is quite a feat for a small club like Terrace, noted coach Jennifer Kuehne.
The team only had 10 skaters, but earned enough medals to beat even larger clubs such as Prince George and Dawson Creek.
“This is the sixth time in a 47-year history that the Terrace Skating Club has taken home the regional trophy,” said Kuehne.
“To do that two years in a row is a big accomplishment for our club.”
Terrace skaters will dress up and perform a big Ice Show for the local Terrace community on March 9, skating to the theme good vs. evil.
