The 50th anniversary celebrations for the White Rock-South Surrey Skating Club got off to a “solid gold” start last month at South Surrey Arena.
The club – which was formed on the Semiahmoo Peninsula in 1967 – held its bi-annual winter carnival on Feb. 25, and the solid-gold themed event, which featured music from the 1960s to present day, saw more than 180 skaters hit the ice for a variety of routines, and nearly 800 spectators come through the doors for the two shows, a 1 p.m. matinee followed by an evening performance.
“The carnival was a huge success,” said WRSSSC’s past-president Siobhan Phillips.
The last winter carnival, held in 2015, was “a little bit smaller” than in previous years, Phillips told Peace Arch News last month, and this year organizers were determined to return the one-day event to its former glory.
The carnival – which featured skaters of all ages and skill levels, from beginners to adults – also served as a the first of two 50th-anniversary celebrations for the historic club.
An off-ice “social evening,” set for May 13 at White Rock’s Centennial Arena, will also honour the skating club’s five decades in the community, while also bringing back club alumni.
