Timberland Alpine Ski Racers won silver in team glalom at Sun Peaks for the ninth Annual Rio Tinto Alcan Nancy Greene Husky Snow Star Festival from March 25-26.
With more than 400 young racers from around the province at the two-day event, Timberland Alpine Ski racers Keeley Holloway, Warren Scrooby, Bjorn Hunt and Abayah Hunt, along with three other racers from Grouse Mountain, combined their efforts to win the team silver.
“After a great season of Nancy Greene lessons every week at Mt. Timothy from January to mid March it was a fun-filled wrap up for youth aged five to 11 who are in the Nancy Greene Ski League all over the province,” said Timberland Alpine Ski School coach and co-ordinator Elizabeth Hunt.
At the event were skiers representing Whistler, Grouse Mountain, Sun Peaks, Harper Mountain, Mt. Washington, along with several others.
The event included team and individual glalom races on OSV (a run at Sun Peaks), and skills competitions on Exhibition and Intimidator including jumping, kombi, speed trap and moguls. Glalom is for young racers and combines giant slalom and slalom.
“Our TASS racers had many top-10 results in events such as jump, radar and moguls,” Hunt said.
In addition, the world-famous Nancy Greene was on hand for the festival to give awards, pose for photos and sign autographs. Elli Terweil, a B.C. Alpine and Canadian Team racer at the top of her class, was also on hand to encourage the young up-and-coming skiers and give out awards.
Hunt said the Nancy Greene Ski League is a solid ski program for children that builds foundational skiing and racing skills through the development of the skiing “ABCs” — agility, balance, coordination, strength and speed.
“TASS would like to send a special thanks to all the hard-working staff at Mt. Timothy for an amazing season,” Hunt said. “It is a small hill but it offers wonderful people, skiing opportunities and great food.
“As well, special thanks to Mark and the boys at Red Shreds, who sponsored some of our racers with waxed and tuned skis.”
Hunt added much praise must also go to Chris Holloway, who assisted her both days with coaching and to each racer’s weekly coaches Dave Akins, Mark Robertson and Chris Campbell.
