Skim Jam on Sunday

Oceanside skimboarders to converge on Parksville Bay

The forecast is for fun as the newly floated Oceanside Skimboarding Skim Jam is set to take over Parksville Bay on Sunday.

This is the second year a skimboarding event has been held in Parksville, and when the organizers of last year’s inaugural event went out of business, the Mountain family, who own Smithfords in Qualicum Beach, stepped up.

“It’s just a great sport and Parksville is fantastic for it,” John Mountain said.

There will be a half-dozen DB pro boarders in town to hang out with the locals and show their stuff. The pros will be in Metchosin Saturday for a competition at Woody’s Lagoon.

“It’s not so much a competition — there will be jumps and rails and things, we will have some prizes, but it’s more just these pro guys are going to hang out with whoever shows up and have some fun.”

Local pro Justin Tryon, 18, will also be in his element. He was picked up by DB Boards, based out of Tacoma, last summer.

Rain or shine, he said the riders will be down doing their thing. Most of them have been skimboarding since April.

“It’s good action; lots of spills and thrills, and the camaraderie of these guys is really cool. We’re going to have a DJ and music out front of The Beach Club from 11-3 on Sunday … we just want to make some noise and have some fun.”

The Mountain family has embraced the sport. They sell DB boards and gear, “but the main thing is we’re just trying to promote the sport for kids to have fun on the beach. When you see the pros in action its phenomenal.”
