Once again the Island’s junior golfers were the big winners at the 18th annual Slegg Lumber Pro-Am golf tournament, held May 27 at Glacier Greens Golf Club. This year’s tournament raised close to $10,000 for junior golf.
Damp drizzly conditions greeted the 28 professionals and 112 amateurs, then the wind, then the rain, and finally the sunshine.
Each team had a pro and four amateurs and the best two net scores were counted on each hole. This tournament is also a popular stop on the Vancouver Island Professional Tour.
Four of the par threes had $10,000 hole-in-one prizes made available by Scott Fraser, Royal LePage, Western One Rentals and Sales, Robannah Developments Ltd. and Canadian Western Bank. Unfortunately that elusive ace was not to be found. The players would like to thank the sponsors for the opportunity. Prizes were awarded to those that were close to the pin. All participants had an opportunity to visit a well-stocked prize table.
First place in the team event at -27 was Kevin Maxwell (Olympic View) and his team of Brian Hotsenpiller, Russ Hotsenpiller, Bruce Coulter and Bud Bryan. Two teams were tied for second at -26. Dan Dupuis (Myrtle Point), Deb Jewra, Don Jewra, Nick Usher and Don Smawley and the team of Matt Matheson (Olympic View), Mark Hedican, John Hedican, Lloyd Muckel and Mike Matheson. Four teams were tied for fourth place at -25.
On the pro side, three pros tied for first with a score of -1. Unfortunately Kevin Black (Seven Hills) had to leave early to catch a plane and could not participate in the one-hole playoff won by Ross Mantell (Qualicum) over Kevin Maxwell (Olympic View). At even par was Weston Gillette (Glacier Greens) and Steve MacPherson (Qualicum). At two-over par were Jason Andrews (Crown Isle), Dan Dupuis (Myrtle Point) and Justin Howard (Glacier Greens).
Special thanks to Ron and Bob Slegg and to the many tournament sponsors. Thanks also to Gary Wood and Kelly Clausen from the local Slegg Lumber stores, to Glacier Greens head professional Bill Kelly and to Gary’s hard-working committee.
