Saturday, the Smithers secondary school boys curling team earned the regional championship by besting teams from Prince Rupert and Kitimat.
Graeme Turney is skip for SSS, with Glyn Doyle at third, Adam Hartnett at second, Malcolm Turney at lead and Sean Turney at fifth.
On the girls’ side, the Kitimat secondary school team took the regional championship, led by Rachel Rice at skip, Taylor Reese-Hansen played third, Micaela Stevenson at second, Leah Anthony at lead and Emma Baker at fifth.
The weekend regional wins mark the third time for both the Smithers Bpys and the Kitimat girls earn the right to represent the region at the provincials.
The two teams developed a strong friendship and rivalry over the years, including both teams going to a curling camp in Edmonton last summer led by Kevin Martin, coach Laurence Turney said.
The SSS boys head to the provincials in Kamloops at the end of February.
