Soccer, baseball and rugby fill local fields this weekend

Oak Bay sports action runs the gamut of sports this week

The University of Victoria women’s soccer team opens the  weekend tonight (Friday, Sept. 18) with a home game at 5 p.m. against the University of Northern British Columbia at Centennial Stadium.

On Saturday, Sept. 19 the local women host the University of Alberta at 5 p.m. at Centennial Stadium before taking a week’s break from game-play.

The UVic men’s soccer squad starts its weekend with two road games, heading to Langley on Friday, Sept. 18 and Abbotsford on Saturday, Sept. 19.

Returning to the Island, the Vikes take on the University of British Columbia Okanagan Friday, Sept. 25, with kick-off at 7:15 p.m. at Centennial Stadium.

UVic men’s rugby team has its season opener Saturday, Sept. 19 against James Bay AA. Head to UVic’s Wallace Field at 2:45 p.m. to cheer on the men.

The UVic women’s rugby team opens its season Friday, Sept. 25 against Lethbridge at Wallace field. The women take to the field at 5 p.m.

Oak Bay’s Castaway Wanderers men’s and women’s teams take on Westshore Saturday, Sept. 19 at a field still being determined at press time (see  cwrugby.com for details).

The women hit the pitch at 11:30 a.m., followed by Div. 1 and premier men’s action getting underway at 1 p.m.

The Premier Baseball League’s Victoria Mariners take over Layritz Park in Saanich this weekend for the Zach Downey Memorial Tournament, with games daily from Friday, Sept. 18 to Sunday, Sept. 20.

The Premier Mariners will take on the White Rock Tritons tonight (Friday) at 5 p.m. before facing the Nanaimo Pirates Saturday at 5 p.m. and the Coquitlam Reds Sunday at 12 p.m.

The Victoria Eagles draw the early slot through the weekend, facing Nanaimo at 8 a.m. today (Friday, Sept. 18) and the Mariners at 10:15 a.m., before taking on Coquitlam at 8 a.m. Saturday, and  White Rock on Sunday.

On the Bantam field, the Mariners squad faces Coquitlam Bantam Reds at 4:30 p.m., before taking on the Nanaimo Pirates Saturday morning at 8 a.m., and the Parksville Royals at 5 p.m. Come Sunday, the championship game goes at 1:30 p.m.

The Mariners Baseball Club will also be presenting the Downey family with a bronze memorial plaque that will have a permanent home at the Mariners’ home field Henderson Park.

The ceremony will take place Sunday, (Sept. 20) at 3 p.m. just prior to the championship game on the Layritz Midget field.

The Victoria Eagles continue their open tryout for the Premier Eagles team Sunday, Sept. 20 at Lambrick Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tryouts are free and people are encouraged to come out.

In Vancouver Island Ladies Field Hockey Association play, the UVic Vikes Field 1 is home to the Division 1 Flickers visiting the Mariners at 3:30 p.m., followed by Lynx 1 at the Patriots at 5 p.m.

Men’s Field Hockey League play takes over the field Sunday, with the Tigers at the Marauders at 8:30 a.m., the Hawks at the Mutineers at 12:30 p.m. and the Rebels 2 at Rebels 1 at 2 p.m.

The Victoria Cougars start their weekend on the road, travelling to Kerry Park to play the Islanders on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Practicing through the week, the Cougs’ next game is slated for Thursday, Sept. 24 when they host the Peninsula Panthers at Archie Browning Rec Centre at 7 p.m.

Come Friday, Sept. 25, they take on the Saanich Braves at Pearkes Rec Centre. Puck drops at 6:30 p.m.
