Soccer players are grabbing their cleats and tying up their laces in anticipation of the start of the soccer season.

The youth soccer leagues are set to hit the field on April 29, with some of the older players getting a few practices in ahead of the start date.

“We’ve got over 300 kids registered this year,” says 100 Mile Soccer Association spokesperson Kersti Toews.

The league has 26 teams made up of players between the ages of five to 18.

Leading up to the season, the association has been holding work bees to get the fields ready for play, as well as holding coaches meetings and referee clinics.

“Everyone’s excited to start now that the snow and ice are gone,” says Toews. “Everyone’s pretty anxious to go on the fields.”

Toews says there has been strong community support leading up to the start of the season, with banner sponsorships and team and division support.

“It’s really, really good,” she says.

The league is also looking for volunteers.

“We’re always looking for extra help on and off the field, so if anyone is interested in stepping up to coach or be an assistant coach or help off the field, with a photo day or the wind up events at the end of the season —there are lots of things we can get you to do outside of being a coach or an assistant coach.”

The association still has limited spaces for U6, U10 and U12 players. Registrations are due back to the Minor Hockey Office at the South Cariboo Rec Centre by 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 20.

The season for U14 teams and below runs May, June and August, while the U16 and U18 teams run just for the months of May and June.

For more information on this or any other soccer-related enquiries, people can call Toews at 250-395-0071 or email the soccer association at office@100mile soccer.com.
