Long distance running star Kate Sokolowski will test herself against BC’s best at next week’s high school track and field provincials.
Competing in the junior girls (14-16 year old) division, the GW Graham athlete earned top five finishes in three events at last week’s Fraser Valley Championships.
The top eight in each event qualified for provincials.
Sokolowski was fifth in the 800 metre run with a time of 2:24.57. She was third in the 1500m run with a time of 5:12.00 and third in the 3000m run with a time of 11:30.40.
GWG teammate Megan Muir also qualified for provincials in the 3000m event, finishing sixth with a time of 12:29.50. She finished fifth in the 1500m steeplechase with a time of 6:21.60.
GWG’s Ryan Higuchi made waves in the senior boys (14-18 year old) division.
Higuchi beat everyone in long jump (6.54m) and triple jump (12.49m), and finished eighth in high jump (1.65m).
Jesse MacDuff, also from GWG, finished third in the 800m run with a time of 1:57.90.
Thomas Bunn (GWG), was sixth in the 800 gram javelin throw, chucking the spear 39.59m. Dakota Mathers (GWG) was eighth in junior boys shot put with a throw of 10.68m.
Unity Christian’s Brayden Collie soared 5.59m in the junior boys long jump, finishing fifth.
AD Rundle’s Morgan Miller made her mark with 9.25m toss and sixth place finish in shot-put.
Another AD Rundle athlete, Kent Hrusik, beat everyone in the junior boys 1500m racewalk, posting a time of 9:09.80.
Chilliwack middle school’s Rowan Hamilton was third in the junior boys hammer throw with a toss of 35.91m.
