More than 350 fans and supporters filled Sooke Community Hall on Saturday night to cheer on the boxers at the Sooke Boxing Club’s Stiff Jab No. 4.
The 10-bout event saw Sooke boxer Parker Lang beat provincial super-heavy-weight champion Sook Sahota in a three-round decision.
“It was great to see a local boxer beat the provincial champ, that’s for sure, but the real highlight of the night came with the girls on the card,” said head coach Ellen Connor.
“At 14 years old, they were the youngest fighters on the card but their fight was by far the most technical. These girls weren’t brawling, they were boxing.”
One of those young ladies, Jill Doucet, was also chosen as the winner of the Stiff Jab award. That award was decided by event sponsors, Sooke Oceanside Brewery, who had representatives at ringside, closely watching the fights.
“They chose Jill for the award for fighters with more than 10 fights, and the novice award went to John Netzlaw. Both these boxers actually have an amazing ‘stiff jab’ and really deserve the award,” said Connor.

Connor added that she is very grateful to the club’s sponsors and all the people who have come out to the boxing events in Sooke.
“I think we’re doing a lot to showcase the sport here in Sooke and it’s only going to grow.”
The next big card for the club will come in June when the West Coast Wonder Woman card returns to Sooke. It’s an all-female event that regularly draws a large crowd.

“Anyone women who want to come and start training for that event are welcome to come out. It’s great exercise for women of any age,” Connor said.
