Sooke soccer season kicks off

More than 300 registered in youth program

The Sooke Soccer Club has begun its fall season.

Soccer club president Laura Lockhart said roughly 300 youth and 70 adult players will lace up their cleats this fall.

“Our numbers are basically consistent with other years, Lockhart said, noting most teams have begun play with the sandlot division getting underway this weekend.

This is the second year players will use the artificial field at Fred Milne Park, which for allow for more playing even in rainy weather.

As for rep teams, Lockhart said the Sooke Soccer Club will field under-14, under-16 and under-17 and 18 gold teams.

The club is also sponsoring an over-30 and Division 3 women’s teams and an over-40 and Division 3 men’s squads.

“The adults teams are undergoing a bit of restructuring and rebuilding this year,”Lockhart said.

The club will host a under-8,9 and 10 mini fest on Oct. 13 to 14 and an under-11 mini-fest Oct. 27 to 28.

The under-12 Futsal festival is Dec. 22 to 23, while the under-13 full field jamboree is set for the weekend of March 9.

There are several development opportunities for players, officials and coaches this season too.

Beginning Monday (Sept. 24) and running through to Dec. 19 is the Fall Academy, where technical coaches Joe Bratanovich and Geoff Satterford will help young players develop new skills and existing skills through the Euro program.

The program is available to kids playing in under-8 to under-14, and is held every Monday.

All coaches must be certified and Sooke will be hosting a fundamentals coaching course on Oct. 21 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for those planning to coach under-7 and under-8 age groups.
