Brad Cox views his selection to Team B.C. as another step in his lifelong journey around the base paths.

“I started playing softball when I was four and I’ve been playing hardball for the last 13 years,” he said.

“Baseball’s always been my passion, and I’ll keep playing as long as I can. I played a lot of sports growing up, but baseball’s been number 1 for a long time. “

Although Cox has set his sights on earning a scholarship following his final year of high school next year, his immediate focus is squarely on the Canada Cup, which takes place from Aug. 8 to 13 in New Brunswick.

Cox was one of four players from the Victoria area to qualify following two tryouts. “I was excited when I got the news,” he added.

After just completing his first year with the Premier League Victoria Eagles, the selection to Team B.C. helps assuage the disappointment of not making the playoffs in his first season with the Eagles.

“We were the youngest team in the league this year,” he noted. “We got a lot of experience and I hope we make the playoffs next year.”

Although Cox plays mostly shortstop and right field, he handled just about every other position during the season.

“I like to think of myself as an all-around utility player, good with the bat and good with the glove.”

Cox credits his father Chris, for much of his success. “He’s coached me every year until this year and helped me every step of the way. My grandfather Joe Medwedrich and my dad have been major influences.”

Chris Cox said while it’s natural for parents to praise their kid’s athletic prowess, it’s great to see other people appreciate Brad’s level of talent. “His mom and I are so proud. It’s good to see him rewarded for his hard work.”

Both father and son were keen to thank Tammi Dimock, a realtor with Royal LePage, Brian and Carol Burket, and HHS Drilling and Blasting for their assistance sponsoring Brad’s first season with the Eagles. Although the team covers some expenses, registration alone is $4,000, Chris explained.

Charlie Strandlund, his coach with the Victoria Eagles, said Cox has definitely earned his spot. “He’s an ultra hardworking kid and easy to coach,” he said.

“Speaking as a coach, he’s one of those players you want on your team because he’s willing to run through a wall for you. I couldn’t be prouder about Brad being selected to join the other players representing B.C. at the Canada Cup. He’s definitely earned the opportunity. It’s pretty exciting.”
