Sooke’s EMCS rout Stelly’s for first win of season

'It's definitely a sigh of relief to get that first game,' said coach Trevor Bligh

The Edward Milne community school senior boy’s basketball team no longer has a goose egg in the win column.

The Wolverines snapped a two-gaming losing streak with a 79-58 victory over Stelly’s Hornets Thursday night in South Island 3A play.

The Wolverines pick up their first win of the season and will look for back-to-back wins Tuesday when they host Esquimalt. The Hornets remain winless.

It was the second game of the week for the Wolverines, who lost to Vic High Totems in a 64-63 heart-breaker on Tuesday.

“It’s definitely a sigh of relief to get that first game,” said coach Trevor Bligh. “This will give the guys some confidence.”

The Wolverines took control early with a 22-9 first quarter lead and finished the half up 43-23.

“The guys were feeding off the last game,” Bligh said. “That one-point loss was tough.”

EMCS played better man-to-man defence throughout the game and their fast-break offence was clicking on all cylinders.

Storm Spackman led EMCS with 23 points and Nick Card chipped in with 14.

On Tuesday night, the Wolverines took a tough loss against Vic High.

Point guard Taye Julien stroked a three pointer with eight seconds left, which would have tied the game, but the referee pulled it back, calling it a two-pointer.

The bad luck didn’t end there. The official took four seconds off the clock near the end of the game, and with seconds left, the Wolverines failed to pot a basket in on an inbound pass.

“The guys just freeze up in certain situations,” Bligh said after the game. “We do things over and over in practice, and they go completely blank in the game.”

Top point-getters for the Wolverines was Julien (18), Wade Fitzner (28) and Clement Casavant (11). Michael Guting led Vic High with 20.

BASELINE … Wade Fitzner is the first player this season in either the north and south division to score 28 points in one game … guard Clement Casavant suffered an ankle injury in Thursday’s game … Four Sooke players are among the league’s top 10 scorers, including Wade Fitzner who leads all scorers with 54 points … The Wolverines host their annual tournament on Dec. 29 and 30 at EMCS.
