Spartans find podium at B.C. championships

Two Trinity Western runners place third in senior race, Spartans also take one-two in junior event

Four Trinity Western runners found the podium at the B.C. provincial cross-country championships and qualified for the Canadian championships.

Blair Johnston and Fiona Benson were third, respectively, in the senior men’s and women’s races, while Levi Neufeld and Joe De Schiffart, were one-two in the junior event.

The race was held on Saturday at Abbotsford’s Clearbrook Park.

Johnson finished the 10-km race in 32:49.22 while Benson finished the six-km course in 22:25.65.

Also in the senior men’s race, TWU’s Mihai Prajea (Calgary) finished 21st in 35:45.92 and Chris Voth (Abbotsford, B.C.) finished 22nd in 35:46.22.

In the junior boys’ seven-km race, Neufeld won in a time of 22:45.75 while De Schiffart was close behind, finishing second in 22:54.91. Nathan Goodwin finished ninth in 25:20.80 while Ross Browne was 11th in 26:00.97.

In the junior girls’ race, the Spartans Meg Harradine finished 14th in 20:24.09, Nikki Bell finished 18th in 21:50.19, Katelynn Ramage finished 19th in 22:03.10 and Laura Merkel finished 21st in 23:17.97.

Up next for the Trinity Western runners is the CIS national championships on Nov. 10 in London, Ont.

The Spartans quartet will race in the Canadian championships in Vancouver on Nov. 24.
