Spartans make quick work of Cougars

Trinity Western women's team takes both matches in straight sets over Mount Royal, while men's team trades five-set victories

A pair of straight-sets victories improved the Trinity Western Spartans women’s volleyball team to 6-4 on the season.

Trinity Western is ranked eighth in the country.

The Spartans faced the Mount Royal Cougars at Kenyon Court in Calgary.

Alicia Perrin led the way on Saturday with a dozen kills and six blocks as the Spartans won 25-19, 25-19 and 25-12.

Sophie Carpentier had 11 kills.

Nikki Cornwall finished with 34 assists to set up the TWU attack as they finished with a .318 hitting percentage.

On Sunday, the Spartans won 25-16, 25-20 and 25-17 as Carpentier and Perrin had 10 kills apiece.

The Spartans men’s volleyball team dropped from second to third in the national rankings after splitting a pair of five-set matches in Calgary against the Cougars.

Mount Royal took the opener 3-2 (21-25,24-26,25-22,25-21,15-10) after winning the final three sets.

Trinity Western salvaged the split with a 3-2 (18-25,25-13,22-25,25-23,15-5) win on Sunday to improve to 7-3 on the season.

Ryan Sclater had 24 kills, eight digs and six blocks and Nick Del Bianco had 14 kills, eight digs and a pair of aces in the victory.

In Saturday’s defeat, Del Bianco led the team with 22 kills and nine digs and Blake Scheerhoorn and Sclater each had a dozen kills.

Both Spartan teams are at home this weekend at the Langley Events Centre against the Manitoba Bisons.
