Spencer girls grab their first Greater Victoria volleyball crown

Grade 8 team rolls through city league playoff tournament undefeated

It took two weeks to complete, but at the end of the city Grade 8 girls volleyball tournament, Spencer emerged on top.

The champs downed Central middle school 25-20, 25-16 in the final last week at Gordon Head middle school to cap a perfect tournament and put the finishing touches on an 18-2 season.

“We’re really proud of this group of girls,” said assistant coach Dean Purdy. “We’ve been building this team for two years and they all contributed to the success of the team this year.”

Helping the team’s skills was the fact six Spencer girls also play club volleyball outside school, coached by Mike Toakley from Belmont secondary.

While they won’t suit up for Belmont in junior girls division play next season, Spencer players will face tough competition playing Grade 9 and 10 junior teams from the Greater Victoria School District in city league play.

Purdy, who helps out head coach Brenda Cyr, believed it was the first city volleyball championship won by a Spencer girls team in Grade 8.

The team hoisted the large trophy on the Wednesday and brought it to school the following day, where the girls were celebrated and congratulated for their efforts.

Spencer and Central won their respective preliminary pools to receive automatic entry into the semifinals.

Spencer downed Arbutus middle school 2-0 in the semis to move through to the final.
