Williamson works magic in U16 Cup

Lumby’s Jagger Williamson was a point-per-game player in helping Team Canucks earn silver at the B.C. Under 16 Hockey Cup last weekend in Salmon Arm.

The 5-foot-7, 150-pound forward recorded a goal and an assist as the Canucks fell 4-3 in a shootout to Team Flyers in the championship game.

Williamson, who plays Bantam Tier 1 with the Vernon Source For Sports Renegades,  scored at the 10-minute mark of the final frame. He then set up Caleb Fantillo (Coquitlam) for the 3-3 goal.

The Canucks went 2-1 in preliminary play, with Williamson netting a goal and assist in their 4-2 doubling of the Bruins. His four points earned him a share of second overall in Cup scoring.

Notable players that have competed in the event include Brent Seabrook (Chicago Blackhawks), Brandon McMillan (Anaheim Ducks) and Brett Connolly (Tampa Bay Lightning).

The next stage in the selection process for Team B.C. will be the U16 camp, July 10-14, in Nanaimo.

Skate of Mind in sync

Skate of Mind enjoyed a stellar season on the synchronized skating circuit.

The Vernon-based squad struck silver at provincials in Surrey, in mid-January, and followed that up with a respectable sixth-place showing a nationals, in Kamloops, in early April.

“This energetic, active group of women enjoy skating together and are committed to a mutual goal of having fun while supporting everyone’s personal efforts that make this team effort a truly great experience,” said Heather Stranks, who coaches the team out of the Vernon Figure Skating Club.

Skate of Mind, sponsored by Metal Structure Concepts of Kelowna, performed to a spicy burlesque number this year. The group features a fun-loving mix of students, career women, wives, mothers and grandmothers.

Vernon members include Ashley Wolfe, Kristy Anderson, Danielle Robert, Cora-Lee Baker, Katie Yavis, January Cucheran and Britney Powell, along with Armstrong’s Jen Phelan, Peachland’s Kayla Nixon and Kelowna skaters Vanessa Daley, Jae Polemar, Tracy Wright, Robin Nettleton and Krista Mallory.

Quotable…

Anaheim Ducks’ head coach Bruce Boudreau has resorted to some cheeky tactics in his attempt to rest up 42-year-old winger Teemu Selanne as the Ducks prepare for the Stanley Cup playoffs. Said Selanne: “He hid my skates a couple times, or he tried to.”
