Legends cap perfect season
The Gilbert Parts/Armstrong Co-Op North Okanagan Pee Wee B1 Legends capped an undefeated lacrosse season Sunday by stopping the Legends B2s 7-2 at Hassen Memorial Arena.
Mason McLennan pulled the hat trick for the B1 Legends, while singles came from Zach Benn, Francois Leroux, Kayden Beauregard and Cam Lock. Beauregard (2), Lock, McLennan and James Francis supplied assists in support of Troy Cuzzetto.
The Legends went 12-0 under coaches Tyler Plante, Travis Mann and Francois Leroux Sr.
Trojans charge down title
The Vernon Trojans ball hockey team captured the Sunplex Stanley Cup recently in Kelowna.
The Trojans finished the high school season with eight wins and two overtime losses before grounding Okanagan Mission Huskies 4-1 in the semis and stopped Kelowna 7-2 in the final.
The bigger Kelowna team was no match for the speedy Vernon boys, who got 3+4 from Kyle Evans and 1+3 from Nathan Spark. Braydon Gilowski, Bryce Goodrich, Conrad McMillan and Chad Larson all supplied 1+2, while Richard Thompson counted three assists.
Josh Evans was outstanding in net.
Notable missing players from the championship game were Cadrin Filleul, Jordan Dewing and Dustin Stasiuk.
Gnats swarm Jackals
The defending Saratoga Cup champion Prince George Gnats ambushed the visiting Vernon Jackals 45-7 in exhibition men’s rugby action.
Kiwi Dan scored the try for Vernon, who will likely face the Gnats in the division III Saratoga Cup championships Sept. 24-25, in Penticton.
“We knew it was going to be a tough game, and a hard-fought physical game, and it was,” said Vernon veteran Bryan Bateman.
“We traveled up pretty light on numbers and Prince George was good enough to give us a couple guys so we could play a game.”
Kiwi Dan scored with a couple of quick jukes and hard running.
“Dan played a hard game, making big tackles and showing great leadership on the field, said Bateman, of the Jackals’ Jack Daniels Man of the Match.
