Mixed curling team win gold
A mixed curling team with players from Penticton and Summerland struck gold at the Canada 55-Plus Games recently in St. John, New Brunswick.
The team, consisting of Tony and Lil Blashko and Glen and Tammy Brennan, first won the gold medal in mixed curling at the 55-Plus BC Games held in Vernon in September 2017.
That win secured them a spot to represent Team B.C. at the Canada 55-Plus Games, held Aug. 21-24.
Team B.C. took on New Brunswick in the Canada 55-Plus gold medal final, defeating them 7-6.
The Canada 55-Plus Games had over 2,300 athletes competing in various sports.
Lake City Basketball hits the court
Lake City Basketball is running fall training sessions for boys in grades 4 to 6 next week.
“We’re really aiming to build the game from the ground up and get more and more young players participating,” said Chris Terris, a Lake City Basketball coach.
Marnie Mennell, a teacher-coach from Summerland and Raj Dhillon, a former Princess Margaret Mustang and UBC-O player, are running the sessions.
There will be nine sessions for grades 4 to 6 players that will run Tuesdays and Thursday from 4 to 5 p.m. at Okanagan College starting on Sept. 11.
For players in grades 7 to 9, there will be 10 sessions running on Mondays from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Okanagan College starting on Sept. 11.
Athletes are required to bring their own basketball.

Big turnout at Penticton Golf and Country Club
The Penticton Golf and Country Club senior men held their four-man team, two best net competition on Sept. 5.
With 90 golfers competing, the winning team of Paul Heatlie, Al McKee, Gary Coy and Ken Barron shot 117.
Finishing in second with a score of 118 were: The team of Dave Littlejohn, Paul Bourque, John Hall and Walter Sobool scored 118.
Tied for second, also scoring 118, was the team of Robin Greer, Ron Koebel, Paul Kennedy and Doug Hutcheson.
Dean Bates shot a blistering round of 64. His round consisted of no bogies and no fives. Bates missed the course record by just one stroke.
