CHSS senior rugby girls qualify for provincials
Even the snow couldn’t stop the CHSS girls rugby team from qualifying for B.C. provincials.
The girls battled the elements in Houston in a tight game. The Houston girls scored on the last play of the game to win 5-0, but both teams qualified because the top two teams from the tournament advanced.
The Vanderhoof team was unable to make it due to the weather. This will be the first trip to provincials for the senior Rupert girls. That wraps up fall play for them, as they won’t compete again until the spring.
The junior girls also played Houston, and lost the game 10-0 despite a strong effort.
CHSS teams excel in playdays
In Kitimat last weekend, the senior girls volleyball team won all three games against Terrace, Smithers and Hazelton to improve to 5-1 on the year.
The girls will have another play day in Smithers on the weekend.
Also in Kitimat, the boys soccer team went 2-0.
Elsewhere, the junior boys volleyball team was in Smithers and won all three games they played as well. The boys beat Bulkley Valley Christian School, Ebenezer Canadian Reformed School and Smithers Secondary School.
Minor basketball tournament
The Prince Rupert Minor Basketball Association (PRMBA) hosted its mid-season tournament last weekend. All 18 teams, from Grade 9 through 12, played a guaranteed two games. Because the league isn’t competitive, there are no losers in the round robin tournament.
But that doesn’t mean it wasn’t intense. In one game between two Grade 7 and 8 division teams, there was a lot of excitement during a finals-like nail biter that ended 68-67 with the losing team having a chance to win it with a last-second basket, but running out of time.
The year-end tournament for the league is Dec. 10 and 11.
