CHSS volleyball teams post another strong weekend
It’s been a strong start to the season for the volleyball teams at Charles Hays Secondary School (CHSS).
The junior boys volleyball team went undefeated for the second straight weekend, only losing one set along the way. The boys are now 6-0 on the year and will play a tournament in Hazelton on Oct. 29.
The senior girls volleyball team also won all three of its games, playing in Smithers. The girls beat Houston Secondary School, Smithers Secondary School and Centennial Christian School (CCS) in Terrace, each two sets to none. The team is 8-1.
Coach Nancy Le said the player that stood out throughout the day was Suttira Johansen, who had five kills in the three games and scored the winning point in the 27-26 match against CCS that Le said was the most intense game of the year so far.
She also mentioned Janna Nelson as the all-star player during that match. Nelson had six kills throughout the day. The best rookie of the play day was Taryn Nelson.
The junior girls volleyball team didn’t have as much success. They lost all three of their games against Caledonia, Skeena and Smithers, which were close games. The girls are still searching for their first win, but have played six games against the top three volleyball teams in the zone.
The team plays in Smithers on the weekend.
Curling club season begins
It’s curling season once again in Prince Rupert. The curling club is hosting its registration and open house this week.
It will run on Wednesday, Oct. 26 and Friday, Oct. 28 from 7 to 9 p.m.
The ice will be open those nights for new or experienced curlers to throw some rocks.
The league has options for full or half seasons, as well as a junior league and some open nights.
Rampage back in action
The Rupert Rampage will hit the ice in Smithers on Saturday.
The rhinos had last weekend off, which might have come at a good time after its first loss of the year, a highly-contested matchup with the Terrace River Kings.
The Rampage and Steelheads are tied for second place in the standings with four points each, but Smithers has played one more game.
