Parksville Curling offers new rec leagues; Castaways host fly-fishing film festival; Oceanside Softball teams with UBC team for clinic

Parksville Curling Club is offering two new league play options designed for novice and casual recreation players, beginning this weekend.

A Friday Night Fun Mixed League, which comes with instruction, begins this Friday, Oct. 14, with draws at 5 and 7:15 p.m. To sign up a rink or for more info, contact Cheryl Noble at 250-586-4945.

On Sunday, the club launches its new “Team of Choice” mixed league, with play beginning at 7 p.m. For info or to sign up, call club members Ray Gamracy at 250-248-8265 or Nancy Douglas at 250-248-4945.

Fly fishers cast film festival

The Mid-Island Castaways fly fishing club will showcase the best of the sport when it hosts the acclaimed film International Fly Fishing Film Fest Sunday, Oct. 16, at the Parksville Community and Convention Centre.

The two-hour film is made up of a collection of the “best of the best” fly fishing films from around the world, making it a self-contained mini film festival.

Doors open at 1:30 p.m. and the film begins at 2 p.m. in this fundraiser for the local club, which donates to multiple stream and fish enhancement groups and programs in the region.

Tickets are $20 and are available in advance at Oceanside Harris GM and Coast Sport Fish in Parksville; at Nile Creek Fly Shop in Bowser; or online at either flyfilmfest.com or the club’s site, midislandcastaways.com.

UBC headlines softball clinic

Oceanside Minor Softball will team with the University of British Columbia women’s softball program in a development camp Oct. 22-23 at the indoor arena of Arbutus Meadows in Nanoose Bay.

The camp will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Following Saturday’s session, the UBC women’s team will hold an open practice from 3-4 p.m. that the public is invited to watch. During Sunday’s session, UBC head coach Gord Collings will host a Q&A session about the UBC program for coaches, parents and athletes.

Registration is $85 per player, and online registration is open until Oct. 16 at www.oceansidesoftball.ca.

Duncan to host Scotties B.C.

The best women curlers in the province will be heading to Duncan this season, Curl BC has announced.

The 2017 Scotties BC Women’s Curling Championship, Presented by Best Western, will take place at the Glen Harper Curling Centre, home of the Duncan Curling Club, from January 17-22. The final four games of the event will be televised on Shaw TV.

“We look forward to working with the host committee and all the volunteers at the Duncan Curling Club,” Curl BC CEO Scott Braley said. “With the Canadian Junior Curling Championships being hosted in Esquimalt the following week, it’s great that the curling community on the Island has so much to look forward to.”

The event will showcase BC’s top women curlers who will be playing for the chance to represent B.C. at the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts in St. Catharines, Ontario.
