Apex opens for its 50th year
Apex Mountain Resort will open its 2011/12 season, it’s 50th, on Saturday with the triple chair, T-bar and magic carpet lift. Discounted lift tickets will be in effect. The ski hill’s website stated it is opening earlier because of the amount of snow, over 100 centimetres, which has fallen on the mountain. Apex will then close to the public on Nov. 28 through Dec. 1 and will re-open for the season on Dec. 2.
Lakers fundraiser against Coyotes
Pen High’s leadership squad is partnering with Save-On Food and the Penticton Lakers to raise funds for B.C. Children’s Hospital. On Nov. 29 as the Lakers host the Osoyoos Coyotes, there will be unique fun and games, live and silent auctions and celebrity appearances. Auction highlights include a jersey from the 1972 Canada versus Russia Summit Series, signed by the entire team and an autographed 2010 Women’s gold medal hockey jersey. Game time is 7 p.m.
Enhancement Studio junior Vees
Last weekend the Enhancement Studio junior Vees (Tier 2) travelled to Salmon Arm and placed fifth out of 14 teams. In their final game against Quesnel, the Vees won 4-0 with the fourth goal scored by goaltender Rachel Fontinha, who was “beaming from ear to ear.” The Vees started the tournament by defeating Aldergrove 6-3, then lost to Quesnel 2-1 and tied Ridge Meadows 1-1. Scoring for the Vees were Greg Brydon, Tyrell Buckley, Daylan Devlin, Blake Holowaty, Brayden Wheeler and Dennis Zoeller. Franky Anderson, Michael MacLean and Myles Thibodeau had assists. Forwards Austin Doell, Jayden Doell, Nathan Iannone and Alyssa MacMillan, along with defence Aiden Hutcheson and Cooper Prechel all worked hard with their teammates. Goaltender Stephanie Hogg made the opposing team work hard for their goals. The weekend before the Vees hosted a tournament and played fifth out of 10 teams.
Red Rattlers split games
Ian Heck and Harias Bansoota scored hat tricks to lead the Tim Horton’s Red Rattlers past the Tim Horton’s Orange Tigers 8-5 in novice action. Ben Togyi and Trent Ashby also scored goals, while Meadow Arcand-Squakin enjoyed a three-assist effort. Tigers goals scored by Joshua Roy, Ethan Russell, Hayden Krause, Brendan Lobb and Rocco Hamilton. The Rattlers then lost to Oliver 4-1. Bansoota scored the lone Rattlers goal.
Needham chosen for Team Pacific
Penticton’s Matt Needham has been selected to Team Pacific for the 2012 World under-17 Hockey Challenge held in Windsor, Ont., from Dec. 29 to Jan. 4. Needham plays for the Kamloops Blazers, who are currently in second place in the B.C. division. He had four goals and eight points in 19 games.
