Kiana Casavant net national bronze, curling club annual general meeting Glengarry Figure Skaters highlighted

Penticton’s Kiana Casavant earned a bronze medal in the 2014 Junior Women’s Lacrosse National championship with Team B.C. in a 5-3 win over Nova Scotia on Aug. 9.

Team B.C. opened the championship in Whitby, Ont., with a 5-0 win against the same team. In their second game, Team B.C. lost to Alberta 6-1, then lost to Ontario 7-2. On Aug. 8, B.C. lost to Alberta 7-2, then defeated Nova Scotia 5-3 to meet them in the bronze medal match. The year before, Casavant helped Team B.C. win the national championship.

Curlers set to meet for new season

The Penticton Curling Club is having its annual general meeting and registration night at the club on Sept. 23 from 5 to 8 p.m. with new and returning members asked to attend. There will be a meal catered by Okanagan Vintage Caterers for $11 between 5 to 7 p.m. There will also be several door prizes to be won.

Registration can also be done online then completed at the meeting.

The leagues in which people can choose to play over 24 weeks are recreational men, women and mixed, senior daytime for men or mixed, Thursday competitive for all ages, Sunday beginners and active for all ages, junior for six 16-years-old and stick curling for all ages. Learn to Curl classes take place in the late fall.

Sign-up begins in September. The Curling Club is also working on the start of a new Business League this season, following the lead of other clubs across the province that have it in place. Businesses interested in joining are asked to contact the club. Skaters get first competitive test

Glengarry Figure Skating Club members returned from the  BC/YK Super Series SummerSkate in Burnaby Aug 14 – 17. Nadia Snyman and Jordana McEachern earned season and personal best scores, respectively, with Snyman finishing 14th with 16.37 points and McEachern 15th with 19.05 points. Alanna Walters finished 15th in the senior bronze lades to earn a season best score of 14.35 points, while Chantelle Stevens picked up silver  in Star 1 and Sienna Nichols, bronze. Joceylyn Erdt earned silver in Star 3, while Samantha MacNally was sixth in the Star 4 group.
