The Quality Foods Oceanside Generals invite the community to join in as the junior hockey club highlights Prostate Cancer Awareness month and Remembance Day with special events throughout November.
This Saturday, Nov. 5, the Generals will host Campbell River in their Remembrance Day game at 7:30 p.m. at Oceanside Place Arena. The colour party from the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 49 will be joining the opening ceremonies and a piper will leading them into the arena. It will be a night to honour the fallen.
The rest of the month will be dedicated to prostate cancer awareness as the Generals join the annual “Movember” campaign.
Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in Canada, affecting one in seven men. In 2014, approximately 233,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and more than 29,000 men will die from the disease. One new case occurs every 2.3 minutes and a man dies from prostate cancer every 18 minutes.

The first 50 fans through the door for the Generals’ Nov. 12 game at Oceanside Place will receive a free Movember T-shirt. Winners are encouraged to wear their T-shirts to all the Generals home games in November to show support of prostate cancer survivors and the ongoing research for a cure.
On Nov. 20, any Oceanside Minor Hockey player will be admitted free of charge, when accompanied by a paying adult.
On Nov. 26 the Oceanside Prostate Support group will be in the arena to share members’ stories and provide information.
The Generals will be supporting Prostate Cancer on the ice too, look for the colour blue.

Oceanside women win on pitch; host game Sunday
Coming off a big, 7-0 win over the visiting Alberni Athletics Sunday, the Oceanside United women’s soccer team returns to the Qualicum Beach rec fields this weekend to host the Courtenay Shooters in Mid-Island Women’s Soccer League play.
Sunday’s game begins at noon on the pitch behind the Civic Centre.
Christina Ciolfi scored two goals and Emma Johannson extended her team scoring lead with two more in Sunday’s win.
Oceanside (2-3-1) also got goals from Shelly Terpstra, Rebecca Kurucz and newcomer Jessica Webb, who formerly played for the Athletics before relocating from Port Alberni.
