Football league rewards Pentictonite

Penticton’s Arie Nakagawa was recognized as the British Columbia Football Conference named its all-star team and award winners. Nakagawa, who played for the Langley Rams, made the defensive all-star squad with 37 tackles, 14 assists, three sacks, one interception and a fumble recovery. He was also a major award winner being named outstanding linebacker. The Rams finished the season 5-5, though they played in the Cullen Cup, the championship game for the BCFC and lost 44-0. The Rams advanced to the final when they upset second seed Okanagan Sun 31-29.

Glengarry skating concert

The Glengarry Figure Skating Club has its winter concert at McLaren Arena on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to  10:15 a.m. There will also be time with Santa. Hot chocolate and cookies will be available by donation.

Gold medal winner Bilodeau at Apex

The Canadian Freestyle Ski Association has just announced that 2010 Olympic gold medallist Alex Bilodeau will be at Apex Mountain for the Canadian Selection camp along with other members of the Canadian national team.

Freestyle tryout at Apex

The Apex Freestyle club welcomes the public to join them on Dec. 17 and 30 for Try Freestyle Free.  AFC is offering two separate days of Try Freestyle for kids ages five to 16. Freestyle skiers enjoy moguls, bumps, jumps, terrain parks, free-skiing and rail features. OHS partners with Canucks

The Okanagan Hockey School and Vancouver Canucks announced a partnership. The OHS will launch a camp at the Surrey Sport & Leisure Centre beginning Aug. 5, 2012 for kids aged five to 14.

Locals make impact with Selects

Penticton’s Connor Walton traveled with the Burnaby Mountain Select boys sophomore elite lacrosse team for a tournament in Annapolis, Maryland. The Selects went 3-1-2, defeating Claxpo 19-0, Cav Lax 2014 9-2, and the Saints 12-6. Penticton’s Chris Pond and Mitch Walton played with the Selects senior elite team that went 2-3-1 in Edgewater, Maryland. The Selects started with an 8-0 win against Chesapeake Rock (Maryland), then lost to Headstrong 2012 (Pennsylvania) 5-4, tied the Edge Elite Sr./Jr. (Ontario) 6-6, followed by a 9-2 loss to South Shore (New Jersey), then defeated Edge Elite Sr./Jr. 9-7 and lost to Mesa Fresh (Pennsylvania) 6-2.

Penticton men’s rec hockey

In Penticton Men’s rec hockey, the Hitmen cruised past the Best Damn Wings 10-3. Mark Petry and Dave Sandrelli each scored four goals. Brendan Miller led the Wings with two goals. Peacock’s Perch Wolverines then defeated the Wings 9-7. Jamie Britton, Andy McGinn, Aric Stickneyand Rod MacMurchy scored twice, Ryan Sjoberg adding the single. For the Wings, Brendan Miller had a five-goal effort.

Grade 9 Lakers

The Pen High Lakers Grade 9 girls basketball team defeated Princess Margaret’s B team 44-2 this week. Carleigh Dean scored 11 points while Tessa Lannon-Paakspuu had eight points and five steals.

“I would have liked our girls to be more patient and methodical with our offense,” said Lakers coach Dustin Hyde. “We are still working on understanding our system and what options are available. Instead we played rushed and didn’t regularly take our time to create good looks.”

The win improved the Lakers to 2-0. Recently, the Lakers defeated the South Okanagan Secondary School Hornets 43-18. Lannon-Paaskpuu had 13 points while Madi Bonneau had 12.
