Rec hockey draft, university volleyball action and Vees Sam Mellor among highlights in sports briefs

Rec hockey draft

Penticton Men’s Recreational Hockey League is having a draft for a new season Oct. 1 at 9:15 p.m. at Memorial Arena.  It will be a full gear scrimmage. Players must bring cash or cheque for $480.  If they are selected by a team this will be the payment for their yearly fees.  If they are not selected the money will be returned that night.  The season begins Oct. 3 with ice times Monday at 9:15 p.m. in Memorial Arena, Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. in OHS, Thursday at 9:30 p.m. in Memorial Arena and Sunday at 8:30 p.m. in OHS.  Full stats are done on the website at www.recsms.com.

University volleyball action

Men’s university volleyball will be at Princess Margaret Secondary School Thursday evening.Trinity Western Unviersity will take on University of Alberta with warm-ups beginning at 6 p.m. and game at 7 p.m. Tickets are $2 for adults, $1 for students, $5 for families and free for kids under six.

Continental Cup on Facebook

The 2013 World Financial Group Continental Cup now has a Facebook page. It can be found at www.facebook.com/pages/WFG-Continental-Cup/403718142994374. Those who click the “like” button will be able to stay on top of all the exciting things that are going to be happening between now and the start, which is four months away.

Mellor commits

Penticton Vees forward Sam Mellor has committed to Western Michigan University. According to College Hockey Inc., Mellor agreed to the scholarship offer on Monday for the 2013-14 season. On the weekend, Mellor collected three assists in a win over the West Kelowna Warriors and one assist in a 4-2 loss to the Prince George Spruce Kings on Saturday.

Men’s slo pitch

In men’s slo pitch, Gutter Done Right Titans edged the Brewskis 19-16. Mark Ploner hit a grand slam.  A seven-run sixth inning for the Titans helped them come back after trailing the entire game.
