Abbotsford’s two college volleyball programs face off this week.

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades host the Columbia Bible College Bearcats on Friday and Saturday in PACWest regular season action at the Envision Athletic Centre. The women play at 6 p.m. both nights, followed by the men at 7:45 p.m.

RUGBY MEN RIP ROWERS

Abbotsford’s elite men’s rugby team ran its record to 4-1 with a 48-15 victory over the Rowers last Saturday at Exhibition Park.

Shea Bourquin and Aaron Flagg scored two tries apiece for Abby, while Harry Toews, Patrick Shields, Ryan McWhinney and Jared Douglas notched one apiece. McWhinney (backs) and Chris Chalmers (forwards) were named men of the match.

In other action, the Abbotsford Div. 1 men beat their Rowers counterparts 27-17 behind tries from Jordan Tait-Comis (2), Mike Makara, Dan Tou and Iqbal Sidhu. The Abby Div. 1 women dropped a 76-5 decision to Kelowna/UBC-O, with Mackenzie Edwards scoring the lone try.

CASCADE HOOPSTERS SECOND IN OTTAWA

The University of the Fraser Valley women’s basketball finished second at a preseason tournament in Ottawa.

The Cascades defeated Brock University 69-61 and Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) 89-63 en route to the final, where they fell 64-52 to the host Carleton Ravens. Nicole Wierks paced the Cascades with 12 points against Carleton, while Tessa Klassen posted nine points, two assists and three rebounds. Klassen was named a tournament all-star.

“A lot of lessons on physical play,” Cascades head coach Al Tuchscherer summarized following the Carleton loss. “Beat us to every loose ball and rebound, crushed us on every screen. They did the things that top 10 teams do. We must learn from this experience.”
