Sports in brief: Etienne honoured for defensive prowess

Tristan Etienne of the W.J. Mouat Hawks senior boys basketball team was named the top defensive player at the Legal Beagle tournament at Port Coquitlam’s Terry Fox Secondary on the weekend.

Etienne, a 6’9” Grade 10 centre, helped the Hawks to a fourth-place finish at the high-profile event, which brings together most of the top AAA teams in the province. The Hawks opened with a 61-41 win over the Sir Charles Tupper Tigers of Vancouver, then dropped a hard-fought 59-56 decision in the semifinals to the No. 1-ranked Kelowna Owls. Mouat finished with a 55-53 loss to the host Terry Fox Ravens in the third-place game.

HADWIN NAMED CANADA’S TOP MALE PRO

Abbotsford’s Adam Hadwin has been named the Male Professional of the Year by the Golf Journalists Association of Canada.

Hadwin’s brilliant 2011 season thrilled Canadians coast to coast. He tied for 31st at the U.S. Open at Congressional before putting himself in position to win the RBC Canadian Open in Vancouver, where he finished tied for fourth.

Hadwin also had a seventh-place showing at the PGA Tour’s Frys.com Open and won the Canadian Tour’s Pacific Colombia championship. Hadwin closed the year the highest ranked Canadian golfer on the World Golf Rankings at 214.

BRUINS EXCEL VS. T-BIRDS

The Fraser Valley Bruins major midget hockey team took three of a possible four points against the South Island Thunderbirds last weekend.

The Bruins won Saturday’s opener 1-0 behind a terrific performance from goalie Alex Orth, who made 40 saves for the shutout. Jake Virtanen notched the lone goal.

The T-Birds raced out to a 3-0 lead in Sunday’s rematch, but the Bruins battled back to secure a 3-3 draw on goals from Mike Nolan, Matt Revel and Michel Holub. Mitch Skapski picked up two assists for the Bruins, whose 11-10-5 record is good for seventh in the B.C. Major Midget League.
